Camera protection tips for harsh weather conditions

Photography, when treated as a passionate hobby can lead you to shoots that entail being exposed to extreme weather conditions. For moments like these, you would need to protect your precious camera gear. Photography student, Janique Goff Madison, shares some tips how to keep your camera safe for outdoor shots.

Wrap your camera in protective rain cover. Moisture is the main culprit for malfunctioning cameras, especially in humid weather. To prevent this from happening, purchase a protective rain cover. If you want to save some cash, Janique Goff Madison suggests using a non-biodegradable plastic shopping bag as long as all the rubber doors that cover your camera inputs are sealed.

Always bring a dry cloth. Always keep a clean, dry cloth handy to wipe away any kind of condensed water on the outside of your camera and lenses. Keep three to four small cuts of dry cloth sealed in a plastic bag to keep them dry and reusable at all times.

Get a hand-pump blower to eliminate sand. Aside from dampness and moisture, sand is a photographer’s enemy when it comes to protecting gear. Sand can easily get into creases and lenses, and should not be wiped off because it can damage the surface of the camera. Instead, purchase a hand-pump blower to blow off sand so you can get rid of it without scratching your camera.
